Just so the it's easily available in a public forum, here's the link to the web album I'm using to post my (mostly Japan-oriented) pictures.  Please feel free to peruse, and by all means leave comments!  They make me happy.  :-)

Catching up on more pictures.  I am delighted to say that all of these were taken within 20 minutes of my apartment.  They're from a gorgeous Saturday afternoon I spent exploring my friendly neighborhood 16th-century castle (well, most of the remaininig original structures were wiped out during WWII, but they rebuilt it quite nicely).  Gambatte!

Today was one of the great days.  I took an 8.5 hour bike ride with 4 friends that took me into a Shinto temple, over the remains of an old castle, up one of the toughest mountains I've ever climbed (shorter but steeper than l'Alpe d'Huez...which must put the grade at about 13-14%!  Yikes...), and featuring both sesame-honey and black-soy-bean gelato (both of which were delicious, but I can most highly recommend the latter).  Also, there was archery on horseback.  No, I am not kidding.  Yes, I took pictures.  No, they are not organized for uploading yet.  I did, however, get caught up on my Osaka pictures from earlier this month, which you can check out here:

Looking forward to seeing lots of you back in DE next week.  :-)

Odd HeadlineOdd Headline

This isn’t really Japan-related, but I caught this headline when I logged on tonight, and couldn’t resist commenting. Am I the only one who detects something disturbingly pugilistic in our “diplomacy” lately?

Today, on the morning train to Mitsu, I explained Frosty the Snowman in Japanese.  Fortunately, I had recently learned the words for 'special' (tokubetsu) and 'hat' (boshi).  I learned that my friend Komotosan likes snowball fights more than snowboarding, and thinks that Americans use carrots on snowmen because we have big noses.

Also, 5 small, colorful cats have taken up residence in the forest of bicycles outside my apartment.  They're too big to be kittens, but still gangly enough to look like kindergarteners experimenting on a jungle gym for the first time.

It took some doing, but I have now sampled Ramen noodles from all 4 of the principal schools (Shio, Tonkotsu, Miso, and Shoyu).  Believe me, they're nothing like what you find at ACME.  Shio was the most unexpected, Shoyu the smokiest, Miso the least like what it sounds, and Tonkotsu the most like Kobe.  They are all delicious, and I must suppress the desire to eat them every day.

Just testing...can anybody out there read this?

If so, hello from Japan.  :-)
